“It’s Only Rock and Roll 2010”

A benefit for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a guaranteed good time, and this year’s It’s Only Rock and Roll extravaganza was no exception. The event was held at Public Hall with 800 guests dressed in “rock and roll chic” attending the VIP reception and dinner on the main floor. An additional 2,000 people were in the balcony for the concert.
Music was the highlight of the evening. Performers included new inductee Terry Sylvester of the Hollies, Gene Chandler (of Duke of Earl fame), Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad, Tommy James and the Shondells, Sheila E, Richie Furay and Fefe Dobson. When MC Hammer and his backup dancers took to the stage, the audience was invited to come up and join them! Each year the featured performers are accompanied by the fabulous Rock Hall House Band made up of renowned veteran musicians Jeff Adams, Ricky Byrd, Jeff Carlisi, Liberty Devitto and Rob Arthur.
Joe Mineo of Something New Designs in Canfield has devised the most extraordinary décor for Rock Hall benefits for the last eight years. His theme this year was “cirque de la musique,” featuring performance art. For example, the red carpet leading into Public Hall was actually the LONG train of a fabulous showgirl’s red dress.
The live auction is an exciting component of the evening. How about meeting lead singer and international celebrity Bono after being flown by private plane to a U2 concert? Or attending a concert of The Eagles, with special guest The Dixie Chicks and Keith Urban, then going backstage to meet them all? There was also an internship at Rolling Stone Magazine up for grabs, as well as a B.B. King signed “Lucille” Gibson custom guitar.
It’s Only Rock and Roll 2010 netted over $325,000. Congratulations to benefit chair William Rowley, his committee and to PNC, the event’s presenting sponsor. Monies raised will support the museum’s nationally acclaimed educational programming. STORY BY CAROLINE R. MERK/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT MULLER
