Has it really been 15 years since the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum celebrated its opening with one of the biggest bashes Cleveland has ever seen? Yes, and it can still throw a great party. Eight million visitors from all 50 states and 100 foreign countries have come through its doors.
More than 1,000 rock fans, of all ages, shapes and sizes, showed up at the Rock Hall Ball which featured lots of loud and rocking music. Some 200 or so came early to honor Senator George Voinovich at what he called, “a combination birthday party and pep rally.”  He relived the tale of the Rock Hall. There were, he said “a lot of ups and downs” before the hall became a reality. As he looked at the sun setting behind him, he said, “this was the place to have it wasn’t it, Albert?,” with a nod to Forest City’s Albert Ratner, who was standing nearby and was one of the key players in the enormous project.
Introducing the Senator, Rock Hall CEO Terry Stewart called him, “a true fan of rock and roll, the peoples’ music, who has always been the peoples’ politician.” The  Senator credited his three children, George, Betsy and Peter with convincing him to get behind the fledgling project all those years ago. Commenting that he and his wife Janet had met a lot of rock stars, he admitted he still didn’t know who “Sting” was.
That’s all right, Senator; I bet he knows who you are! STORY BY MARTHA TOWNS/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT MULLER
