“App to the Future”

SPACES Art Gallery took technology to heart for its annual benefit and art auction this year. Encouraging guests to “fire up the flux capacitor” and get in the mood to party, the organizers decorated the rooms with dozens of colorful storage disks, computer mice and blinking lights all around. Photos could be had at the “SPACEbook” booth, and purchasing data cards for $1 or $5 gave one the chance at gift certificates and other fun prizes from the smoke-producing, cardboard Univac “computer.”
Every year SPACES has a special array of artworks done around a specific theme or size, usually priced for quick sale. This year’s challenge was to create something no larger than 10”x10”. The $100 pieces ranged from sculpture and paintings to prints.
VIPs started the evening on the main floor, rather than in their own space as in previous years. Their $135 tickets provided them with first dibs on the many art pieces for sale, as well as several VIP packages. A delightful supper buffet from Flavor the Town Catering added just the right touch.
At 8:30 p.m., holders of the “Browser Ball” tickets at $45 came in for desserts and light hors d’oeuvres from area restaurants. Or for $10, people could come in at 10 p.m. to dance the night away. STORY BY LINDA McMULLEN/PHOTOGRAPHS BY JOHN BASHIAN
