St. John West Shore Hospital’s “Festival of the Arts Patrons Preview Party”” is creating a serious rival to UH’s “Five Star Sensation.” The spectacular “Top Chef” competition, raised more than $200,000 to benefit community outreach and wellness ministry programs for the hospital.
Just like the TV show, celebrity judges — food star Ted Allen, author Michael Ruhlman and PD writer Marcia Pledger — sampled and critiqued appetizers and entrées from four of the area’s most renowned restaurants. The twist: the sell-out crowd of 1,000 got to vote for their favorites, too! The long lines for tastings were well worth the wait.
Brandt Evans’ (Blue Canyon) Jerk Spiced Duck Wing and Pretzel-Encrusted Trout won the Top Chef competition. Rocco Whalen (Fahrenheit) — serving Chicken Spring Rolls and American Kobe Beef Short Ribs — took the People’s Choice award. Tim Stadnick (Giovanni’s Ristorante) made Pasta Nests with Pesto and Marinara Sauces and Chicken Breast with Sweet Pea and Caramelized Onion Risotto; and Rachael Spieth (Three Birds) offered Chilled Pomodoro Zuppa with Avocado plus Sea Scallop atop Chipotle Tomato Salad.
SJWS President Cliff Coker owned up to having the idea for the fundraiser. “I thought it was time to shake up our preview event,” he said. “I threw the idea out and my people just ran with it.” Ran indeed! Patrick Garmone and Kathleen Bacha headed the event, which is now planned as an annual chef-showdown. STORY BY LINDA McMULLEN/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT MULLER
