Summa Foundation “Sapphire Ball”

This year’s Sapphire Ball to support the Summa Foundation brought 1,000 supporters to Akron’s Knight Center. Guests made strong fashion statements at the black-tie event. Dozens of corporations provided a support base with hundreds of individuals completing the guest list.

Chairpersons Lori and Mark Krohn headed the event’s committee. Funds raised at The Sapphire Ball are earmarked for a groundbreaking program at the Center for Health Equity where families are given holistic attention on how to eat, exercise, stay well and access care.

The multi-course dinner included seared scallops with mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes. Second course was a split entree of filet mignon and chicken, both interesting preparations. Thomas Strauss, President and CEO of Summa Health System explained that guests could use their phones to text a financial commitment to “fund the need.” An atmosphere of excitement prevailed as donations, both large and small came in, and were recognized on large screens. When the total went over $1,000,000, the crowd went wild.

In celebration, music was provided by Cool & The Gang. Within 90 seconds, the dance floor was filled, a sure sign of a successful night. STORY BY ART THOMASPHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT WETZLER
