Founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and sister of its namesake Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker was the guest of honor at Pinktacular in the City, the benefit presented by and for the Northeastern Ohio affiliate.
Patrons of the event, held at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown, had the opportunity to pose for souvenir photographs with Mrs. Brinker, the former ambassador to Hungary, United States Chief of Protocol and 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, who later signed copies of her book, “Promise Me.”
The ballroom, awash in pink lights and balloons, was the staging for a silent auction, a balloon raffle and wine grab, along with beverage and hors d’oeuvres stations. Monica Robins, WKYC-TV3 senior health correspondent, served as both emcee and the entertainment as vocalist with her band The Whiskey Kings. Affiliate Board president Sue Kurzweil introduced honorary chairman Beth Mooney, president and COO of KeyCorp, who earlier that day had announced a $1 million grant from the KeyBank Foundation to the Susan G. Komen Lay Health Advisors Training Program.
“In 1980 you couldn’t say or print the word breast in the media,” said Mrs. Brinker in her remarks. “Today Susan G. Komen for the Cure has raised almost $2 billion for this cause. There is not enough pink in the world where someone dies of breast cancer every 69 seconds.” STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
