The game plan was clear: let friends of the American Diabetes Association loose on the floor of Quicken Loans Arena for an evening of good food, casino gaming and great auction items. If organizers worried the LeBron "decision" circus the night before would cause a distraction, there was no need. Everyone”s attention was focused on raising money to support  area children and adults who battle Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes every day. In fact, before the party, event sponsor PDM Healthcare held an open-to-the-public MedExpo in the "Q" for those interested in the latest medical innovations.
MVP ticket holders had a pre-event reception at the Bar Symon/Cavaliers” Practice Court. Not many took the opportunity to toss a few basketballs, but it was a good chance to meet the evening”s honorary chair, Henry S. Ford, SVP and General Manager of FOX Sports Ohio, as well as the celebrity dealers: Frank Stams (Browns), Al Jenkins (Dolphins), Otto Orf (Force/Crunch) and Hector Marinaro (now JCU soccer coach).
The main party took place on the arena”s event floor, with food stations offering Asian fare, salad fixings, beef tenderloin and luscious desserts. Following dinner, the Circle of Hospital Award presentation honored Drs. Daniel Weiss, Patricio Aycinena, Armand Krikorian and Leann Olansky, as well as the Akron General Health System for their contributions to diabetes research and education. Silent and live auctions helped boost the evening”s results to more than $150,000, which is earmarked for diabetes research and education. STORY BY LINDA McMULLEN/PHOTOGRAPHS BY JOHN BASHIAN
