Marvin Hamlisch wowed the crowd at One Singular Sensation, the Cleveland Institute of Music’s benefit taking its name from his multiple award-winning score for “A Chorus Line.”
CIM Women’s Committee members Mary Beckenbach and Judy Bobel were co-chairmen of the evening that drew some 370 guests to Severance Hall for cocktails and dinner prior to the concert.
Each of the many silent auction items was given the name of one of Mr. Hamlisch’s song titles, said Mary, who expected the party to gross $50,000 — money the Women’s Committee uses to provide operating support and financial assistance to CIM students.
Dinner, catered by Sammy’s, was leisurely albeit perfectly timed for the 8 p.m. curtain. Judy and Mary recognized sponsors CIM Board Chairman Mal and Barbara Mixon and introduced CIM President Joel Smirnoff. After acknowledging the record number of corporate sponsors, Mr. Smirnoff said, “It’s time to enjoy the sumptuous sound and value of a great tune!”
Rounds of applause welcomed Mr. Hamlisch conducting the superbly talented CIM Orchestra in an opening medley of American musical theater songs. Interspersed among his piano solos of his own songs and ones he wished he had written, Mr. Hamlisch cracked jokes and one-liners with the perfection of a seasoned comedian. CIM students featured as soloists were sopranos Claire Connelly and Megan Hamm, mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Tredent and tenor Oswaldo Iraheta. The program concluded with the toe-tapping, signature song from “A Chorus Line” — a real One Singular Sensation! STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
