One-in-Six Foundation founder Bruce Hunsicker and his wife Laura were honored at the fourth annual benefit that raises funds for and awareness of prostate cancer.
The event drew close to 250 costumed and casually attired guests on Halloween night to the Fairlawn Country Club. The aroma of a blazing bonfire filled the air as people started the cocktail hour outside before moving indoors for a clambake buffet. Sister’s Flower Haus in Copley created flower-filled pumpkin centerpieces.
Barbara Porter and Anita Sears were co-chairmen of a large committee organizing the event that included special guest Dr. Charles Drake, Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center oncology professor and research grant recipient. Foundation board member and treasurer David Koly presented a proclamation from Akron Mayor Don Plusquelic to Mr. Hunsicker whose efforts since he started the nonprofit in 2005 have resulted in raising more than $600,000 to fight prostate cancer diagnosed in one in six men. Funds have provided free PSA (prostate specific antigen) tests for men in Summit County as well as prostate research grants at Johns Hopkins. Mr. Koly presented Dr. Drake with a $50,000 check from the Foundation and announced that the event had raised at least $70,000.
Following a live auction conducted by Dan Gill of Kiko Auctions, there was music for dancing by Larry Alltop. All guests received party favor trick or treat bags donated by Hickory Harvest Foods. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
