United Way of Greater Cleveland hosted a “roast and toast” celebration for Mike Benz upon his retirement after 17 years as president and CEO.
The evening at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel drew nearly 900 people, including Mike’s wife Louise and four of their five adult children. Son Patrick spoke eloquently about his father on behalf of the family. Larry Morrow and Terry Moir emceed the program that began with Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson proclaiming the day in honor of Mike to whom he presented a key to the city. Roasts and mostly toasts were made by UW Board Chairman Paul Clark, Chuck Ratner, Chris Connor, Dick Pogue, Joe Cimperman, Patricia Nobili, Sandy Cutler, Morton Mandel, Henry Meyer, Carol Rivchun, Rich Stovsky, Terry Egger, Tim LaRose, David Hook, Bob Reitman and Sandra Pianalto.
During his tenure, Mike Benz, the man who brought the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to Cleveland as well as GuitarMania, has provided the leadership to United Way in raising more than $730 million benefiting health and human service agencies aiding the community. Mike Benz may be retiring but his legacy will long live united. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
