University Hospitals “Miracles Happen”

In its largest annual fundraiser, University Hospitals presented its 10th annual Miracles Happen, a benefit for advanced Cancer Research. Held at the Shaker Country Club, a crowd of 400 were on hand and helped to raise about $300,000 that evening.

At the start of the night, guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, music by Mike Petrone, a silent auction, vacation raffle, miracle tree and more!

Featured chefs were Zack Bruell and Bob Laslo, of Shaker Country Club. Mr. Bruell, owner of a number of restaurants including Parallax, Alley Cat and Table 45, presented a sushi station.

Welcome remarks were given by Ned Hyland and Sean Hennessy, honorary chairs, and Dennis P. Gallagher was honored with the Champion Award. He co-founded the Diana Hyland Miracle Fund along with Diana and Ned Hyland. The fund has raised more than $4.5 million to help fund clinical research and treatment options for advanced stage breast cancer at UH Seidman Cancer Center. Remarks were also made by Drs. Jill Dietz and Shaveta Vinayak.

Event chairpersons were Mary McKenna, Mary Patton and Bridget Vaughn, who worked alongside a volunteer host committee. Orban’s Flowers and Fruits provided stunning floral décor. Top sponsors for the evening were Sean, Kelly, Tim, Meaghan and Danny Hennessy and Ned, Tara and Brendan Hyland.

Funds raised will directly impact clinical research and patient care. Thus far, funding has helped to pilot the development of a vaccine for patients with triple negative breast cancer to prevent recurrences as well as develop clinical drug trials, including four clinical trials for breast cancer using immunotherapy.

The fund was created in honor of Diana Hyland, who lost her battle with metastatic breast cancer in 2008.
