The most transformational announcement in the history of the 145-year old University Hospitals were made by its CEO Tom Zenty at an invitation-only event at Severance Hall.
In recognition of Jane and Lee Seidman’s $42 million gift, the largest donation ever given to the hospital, the former Ireland Cancer Center henceforth will be the Seidman Cancer Center, the only free-standing cancer hospital in Northeast Ohio and one of only 12 in the country. The Seidman Cancer Center on the UH Case Medical Center Campus is scheduled to open in March 2011. The Seidman’s gift, said Mr. Zenty, “launches Discover the Difference, the public fundraising campaign whose goal is $1 billon for the successful completion of Vision 2010.” Since it began in 2003, the campaign has raised $685 million that includes seven gifts in excess of $10 million.
Co-chairmen of the Discover the Difference campaign are Monte Ahuja and Jack Breen, a Lifetime Director of the UH Board on which he has served for 30 years.
More than 1,200 guests crowding the rotunda for the top-secret announcement dispersed for the buffet supper, provided by Sammy’s Catering, available in the rotunda, the Smith Lobby and on the stage.
There, along with an additional bar, the Jamy Haddad Trio played for entertainment. Floral arrangements for the evening were created by Blooms By Plantscaping. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
