Dusty Boots Derby Benefit

Nestled in the Emerald Necklace of the Cleveland Metroparks is Valley Riding Inc., a therapeutic riding program that assists special needs clients. Valley Riding hosted the second annual Dusty Boots Derby Benefit at the public riding stables. Despite a bargain price for the benefit, the event raised more than $50,000 from the 220 attendees.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Valley Riding’s stables outside were decorated with flowers, hay bale couches and ponies. Inside, an extravagant dinner was themed to the Kentucky Derby. Chairpersons Jeni Gaffney and Janna Dressing and their committee transformed the interior, where table centerpieces of loving cups overflowed with red carnations. Guests enjoyed beer, wine and Mint Julips and there was so much food through the social hour that dinner was redundant. One of the young riding volunteers, Dana, told me about an 18-year-old rider she worked with who gained core strength from riding.
Guests at Dusty Boots wore hats which were judged and awards given. There was an extensive silent auction and several raffles going on. Everyone had the opportunity to watched the Kentucky Derby on two huge projection screens and raised paddles to continue the work of Valley Riding. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY ART THOMAS
