The Junior Advisory Board of the West Side Ecumenical Ministry had an “aha” moment when chair Ann Weinzimmer suggested an unusual fundraiser: a scavenger hunt. Roadfest10 began at Lincoln Park in Tremont. Armed with vague clues and a crossword puzzle to unravel locations, teams of three and four had an “Amazing Race” type of road trip.
They were to visit most of a dozen locations, using clues supplied along the way. “We wanted each of the locations to be in Cleveland proper” said co event planner Ryan Dawson. Twenty-eight teams paid an entry fee of $75 each, the major fundraising part of the event.
From Lincoln Park’s gazebo, Dawson explained the rules to the teams. Some teams came in costumes and accessories. The youngest participant was eleven-month-old “Baby Jane” who competed with her mom. The committee created an atmosphere of excitement and competition with the mostly twenty-something participants.
The race was timed, with the start times staggered. If a group got stumped, they could call a cell phone number and ask for a clue or more extensive help. Each assistance added minutes to their time. Locations on the scavenger hunt included the “Free” stamp and restaurants.
The teams returned to an after party for debriefing, sharing stories, and getting prizes. The committee collected a large number of sports tickets and other gifts which were assembled in prize baskets for the first-, second-, and third-place teams. A good natured “consolation” prize was awarded to the last-place team.
