Centennial Gala

The West Side Market’s Centennial Gala capped off a year-long series of celebrations and marked the beginning of the next 100 years. The historic event sold out with almost 900 guests.
Gala co-chairs were Cleveland’s own Iron Chef, Michael Symon, of Lola and Lolita fame, along with Food & Wine’s “Best New Chef,” Jonathon Sawyer, from The Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat. They invited an all-star lineup of local and national chefs to prepare their signature dishes. Sample-sized portions were offered at food stations throughout the market house and produce arcade. What a feast! Special wines, produced by Norman Vineyards and Michael Pozzan Winery, were available at open bars, along with Butcher’s Brew, a commemorative lager created for the occasion by Great Lakes Brewing Company.
WKYC Channel 3 news anchors, Kris Pickel and Russ Mitchell, served as emcees during the program which was held in a tented area next to the Market. Speakers included Ken Marblestone, president of Charter One, the presenting sponsor of the centennial celebrations; Ohio City Incorporated executive director, Eric Wobser; Lutheran Hospital president, Dr. Brian Donley, and Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson. Festivities continued with music, dancing and a glass of Moet & Chandon champagne for everyone to toast the West Side Market!
Presented by Medical Mutual, the Centennial Gala raised $175,000. Proceeds will support improvements and renovations to the landmark building. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY CAROLINE R. MERK
