Fred Baker not only knows fine cars, he knows how to throw a magnificent party. For the sixth year in a row, the Audi entrepreneur hosted a first-class fundraiser for the Western Reserve Historical Society — in particular, the Crawford Auto Museum — at Barrington Golf Club, a venue as beautiful as the weather that evening.
For 2010, the scope of wines offered for tasting expanded to feature Italian vintages, as well as those from Napa Valley. Special guest Filipo Chia from his family’s Castello Romitorio vineyards in Montalcino, Italy, was there, presiding over a table of exquisite reds. BelVino distributors were among those providing a full array of wines, from Acinatico to Zefiro. And those seeking samples of California vintages could chose from Duckhorn, Kenwood, Cakebread Cellars and other Napa offerings.
Only a gourmet meal could complement these superlative wines, and Barrington’s Executive Chef Brad Gambrell and his staff certainly came through, with roasted lamb, beef and Chilean sea bass, plus sushi and made-to-order pastas. And if anyone missed the dessert bar with luscious sweets — like the chocolate paté with chipotle spice — oh, what a mistake!
Co-Chair Tim Novotny worked up support for the $100 raffle tickets, with the prize being a bright red Vespa scooter. Silent and live auctions of luxury items, including tickets for the December 2nd Cavs game with the Miami Heat, helped WRHS toward its goal of $75,000.
