All that glittered was not gold but silver at the annual benefit for Women in Touch with Akron’s Needs, the organization that in its 65 year-old history has funded community charities to the tune of more than $1 million.
This year marked the 25th anniversary of the first patron gala hosted by the Women of WITAN, its acronym WOW, coined by Pat Bigelow, a fitting description of its dedicated members who have contributed more than three million volunteer hours since the organization was founded. Jennifer Kowalczyk and Becky Vieltorf were chairmen of the party held at the Fairlawn Country Club where more than 125 guests enjoyed music by the Intransit Latin & Jazz Trio during cocktails. Everything seemed to sparkle, from the more than 100 items in the silent auction, coordinated by Barbara DeCamp, to the many crystal dishes filled with countless varieties of candies, there for the taking as pick-your favorites party souvenirs.
Welcome remarks by Jennifer and Becky and WITAN President Heather Jalbert preceded dinner and a live auction of a knitted fur jacket donated by a la Mode (formerly M. Castoria) in Chagrin Falls. Music for dancing was provided by Beach Boyz DJ Entertainment and many guests tried their luck at Highrollers’ casino games.
Proceeds from the party, expected to be about $20,000, will help underwrite WITAN’s French Market at Todaro’s Party Center on February 27 and 28. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
